Adele Ratignolle:
physical nature-beautiful golden hair, sapphire blue eyes, lips as red as cherries, somewhat stout but still very graceful, white neck and skin, slender arms, beautiful hands
significance-represents the ideal woman of that age who centers her life around her family and home life, character revolves around children and husband, is everything that Edna feels trapped by and is trying to escape from
quote-"Many of them were delicious in the role; one was the embodiment of every womanly grace and charm....Her name was Adele Ratignolle."
character: I'hait Disbuk.
physical characteristics: very boring, unathletic, has bad acne on her back, hairy feet, has an annoying laugh.
significance: she is just in the book for no reason. Like pretty much everything else in this book. There for no reason.
quote: "Give me a foot massage."
Oh my bad.
Leonce Pontellier:
-wears eye-glasses; about 40 years old; was medium height; sort of skinny; stooped a little when he stood/walked; has brown, straight hair (parted on one side); has a neatly trimmed beard.
-represents the classic male family figure of the age and region: a strong, authoritative, dominant male who doesn't take nothing from nobody, including his wife. He, like the classic male figure, focuses on providing for his family while he expects his wife to take care of the children and house (conflict....)
-quote: "'You are burnt beyond recognition,' he added, looking at his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has suffered some damage."
Edna Pontellier:
Characteristics: eyes were quick and bright and were a yellowish brown. Her hair was a yellowish brown as well. Her eyebrows were a shade darker than her hair ( horizontal). More handsome than beautiful. Captivating face by reason of a certain frank expression always expressed. Engaging manner.
- She is the protagonist in the book. At the begining of the novel, we learn that Edna is comfortable with her marriage and unaware of her own ambitions and desires. However, she is slowly coming to an awakening, as to her true feelings about her life and desires of her heart are revelaed. She is discovering intrest in music, art, as well as sexual desires which she did not realize existed. She desperately wants to break through the image that society has pegged on a young married woman of that time ( wife and children are the only thing that was supposed to matter) and therefore develops strength and courage to do so.
"In short, Mrs. Pontellier was beginning to realize her position in the universe as a human being, and to recognize her relations as an individual to the world within and about her."
MARIEQUITA :)
Physical Nature: Spanish;round, sly, piquiant face and pretty black eye, small hands, broad, coarse, ugly and brown feet, dirty and not shy, brown skin, as well as deprecatory yet saucy in character, which was seen in her mannerisms and facial expressions.
Significance: She is part of a somewhat scandalas affair with Robert that is detrimental in understanding the true nature & character of Robert. Her ugly brown toes with her black pretty eyes accompanied by her label as a "girl" represents a childish, youthful type of women that is in this era competition for Edna. She is naive, unmarried, bold and flirtatious, seemingly a little controlling, and everything that Edna wants to be but can't( which is why i think Edna checks her up and down like she ain't nobody!). Mariequita is barefooted and poor? but free in ways Edna wishes she could be. Mariequita is the character that Edna could have been before her marriage, just without the tom-foolery with boys...( she also seems to be a foreshadower in the respect that Edna might cause some trouble relationship wise just like Mariequita did)...JEALOUSY with Rob.!!!
Quote: "The girl had shrimps in her bamboo basket. They were covered with Spanish moss. She beat the moss down impatiently, and muttered to herself sullenly."
*piquant
my b mrs. moon
Robert Leburn:
Physical Nature: It was said Robert was very handsome and charmng...
Significance: During her stay on Grand Isle, Edna falls in love with Robert. This is what sparks her awakening. While she is having her awakening he flees to Mexico. From what we can see, Edna is not really in love with Robert. She is more in love with the fun and freedom and fun that she has while he "courts her" during the summer. Although Robert is famous for finding a different woman to show intrest in every summer, Edna takes him seriously and he ends up falling in love with her as well...
Quote:"During his ovlivious attention he once quietly rested his head against Mrs. Pontellier's arm. As she gently replused him. Once again he repeated the offence"
Madame Lebrun:
Physical nature: Madame Lebrun is a "fresh pretty woman" who is always dressed in white with elbow sleeves, crinkles could be seen forming in her skirt as she came and went, running the cottages. She was always working at her sewing machine.
Significance: Although we only briefly see Madame Lebrun in the narrative, she is responsible for some people that Edna meets. She owns the house where Edna Pontellier is vacationing with her family. Not only that but Robert, Madame Leburn’s son, becomes the object of Edna's lust this summer at the Grand Isles.
Quote: "How handsome Mrs. Pontellier looked!" said Madame Lebraun to her son.
This quote shows Madame Lebrun almost encouraging the relations between Edna and Robert.
mademoiselle Reize:
Physical- she is a stout woman is refered to mostly as "deformed" older woman with a temper and a strong disposition. slightly awkward, small weazened face and body with eyes that glowed. Badly dressed with fake flowers in her hair all the time.
Significance: Madm. Reize is the catalist for mrs pontellier to become the free willed woman she is transforming into. it is her music that moves her soul to find the person that is waiting to be let go from within her. She also seems to be the only connection she has to robert due to the fact she is reciving letters form robert about mrs. pontellier. Mdam. Reize it the force behind mrs pontellier's transformation as well as her connection with robert.
Quote- "you are the only person worth playing for."
THE DOCKTAHHH (Mandelet)
LOOKIN BOY: a semi-retired physician. He bore a reputation for wisdom rather than skill.
SIGNIGG: Doctor Mandelet is LĂ©once and Edna’s family physician. He recognizes Edna’s dissatisfaction. The doctor suspects that Edna is in love with another man, although he keeps his suspicions to himself because if Edna is indeed in love with someone else any further constraints imposed on her will only intensify her revolt. He offers Edna his help and understanding and is worried about her.
THE TROOF: "Good-by--because I love you." He did not know; he did not understand. He would never understand. Perhaps Doctor Mandelet would have understood if she had seen him--but it was too late; the shore was far behind her, and her strength was gone."
EDNA'S POPS:
physical appearance-hair and mustache white and silky, rugged facial structure, tall and thin, wore a padded coat.
significance-we learn where Edna got her complacency with the idea of a strict husband figure. her father was a colonel in the confederate army and is known to Edna as an authoritative figure, yet someone she can get along with. Edna's acceptance of the Creole life and her husband holding her back from being free can be seen as an idea that was instilled in her as a child, one that she never bothered to argue due to her respect for her father and friendship with him.
quote-"he resented the intrusion of the children, who gaped with wondering eyes at him, sitting so stiff up there in their mother's bright atelier. when they drew near he motioned them away with an expressive action of the foot, loath to disturb the fixed lines of his countenance, his arms, or his rigid shoulders."
