Vocabulary

Connotation: an association that comes along with a particular word. Connotations relate not to a word's actual meaning but rather to the ideas or qualities that are implied by that word.

Upon reading the Metamorphosis

Food for thought:

The first line of the text is very important! Keep in mind that Kafka says that Gregor has been transformed into a vermin.

Note the definition of a vermin--noxious, objectionable, or disgusting animals collectively, esp. those of small size that appear commonly and are difficult to control.

Kafka does not say that Gregor is a roach, beetle, etc. He leaves it up to the reader to make a mental image of what Gregor looks like! (That should sound familiar--think of the Modernists).

So, in class, we will NEVER say that Gregor is a specific insect--just a vermin.

Also, Kafka would not let any artists design cover art for the novella when it was published because everyone just wanted to put a big bug on the cover. So, he chose abstract art instead.

Have fun reading Chapter 1. I LOVE IT and I hope you do, too. It's pretty out there, but that's what great literature is all about!

For Monday

Did I tell you that I'm not going to be here on Monday? Well, I'm not. I just couldn't remember if I told you or not.

Well, on Monday, you will be doing some things (like taking a quiz, doing something with your AP Words, etc) but I also want to give you some independent reading time. So, if you have your book with you, bring it and you will get to read!

I really hope to be here on Tuesday--I'll keep you posted!

Have a safe weekend! I'll probably see some of you tomorrow at John's service.

you forgot

Mrs. Moon,
Did you forget to take up the "whats rotten in the state of Denmark" worksheet today? I heard you say get them out, but you never said pass them forward.... unless I missed something....

Vocab List 1-10

(10) ASYNDETON ~-~ the omission of the conjunctions that ordinarily join coordinate words or clauses, as in the phrase "I came, I saw, I conquered"

Late Latin, from Greek asundeton, from neuter of asundetos, without conjunctions : a-, not; see a-1 + sundetos, bound together

Worksheet

Ok, so in the worksheet that we have for homework, can we just pick any rotten circumstances? I feel like most of them have to do with Claudius trying to kill someone. I'll try to think outside of the box though.

Monday

I will be at school tomorrow! Mr. Moon's grandmother is hanging on, so we were able to come back to Wilmington for a bit.

So, make sure that you have your book choice for me! Also, make sure you are working on the final revisions of your Macbeth essay!

Book

So originally I signed up to read " The color Purple" for our A.P. Reading assignment, but when I was in Barnes and Noble tonight i stumbled across a book that looked interesting and of Literary Merit. It is called The Beautiful and the Damned by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I know that he holds a great deal of literary merit, but I wanted to make sure it was on the list. Is this book alright to read? Let me know! ( I did already buy it, however can return it if I need too.)

The latest

Hi everyone! Just to keep you all informed...

There is a small possibility that I won't be here on Monday. Mr. Moon's grandmother is very ill and is not expected to live much longer. So, we may be at a funeral on Monday.

If I'm not here, I left stuff for you to do with the sub: Hamlet Act V quiz, watch the end of Hamlet, Hamlet MWDS, & AP Words to Know--Week 1.

I'll keep you posted!

I am finishing grades today! I will have your overall Honors English IV grade soon. If you want to know before Monday, email me at hannah.moon@nhcs.net and I'll tell you.

I want to take our new class photo on Monday. Is everyone going to be here?

Monday, we will watch the catastrophe scene in Hamlet, discuss the play, talk about your upcoming Hamlet test, go over the first week of your AP Words to Know, and start MWDS for Macbeth and Hamlet.

Whew! That's a lot!

Have a great weekend!

oops

Hey Mrs. Moon,
So it seems as though I have misplaced the very small sheet of paper with your e-mail on it. Can you post it on the blog so I can send you my paper for editing?
Thanks a bundle!

Hey Mrs. Moon....

You need to be really good to Hunter tonight. He's obviously had kind of a rough day. You should think about fixing him a warm cup of tea, maybe giving him a foot massage, letting him watch a movie or something, you know. Oh and also, tell him that I thought of an answer to his question, about "What have republicans ever done for the people of this country?". Well, ask him which political party it was that set the slaves free, ending centuries of cruel and unjust treatment at the hands of democrats. Thanks!

Choice Novel

So, some people have already chosen their independent reads. If you decide tonight, let me know via the blog. No 2 people can read the same book, so choose early!

See you tomorrow to finish HAMLET!! Woo hoo!

(So now you know why pictures that reference Hamlet usually have him talking to a skull. This is called an apostrophe! Who's skull is it?)

UPDATE: There is EOC testing in my classroom tomorrow during 1st and 2nd. We cannot meet in there. As of right now, we will be meeting in Ms. McCarthy's classroom for our class. (It's Mr. Lucas' old room--across from Mrs. Dombroski). Please let others know of the change for tomorrow. Just bring all your stuff. If there is another change, I'll let you know.

Im back

Fear not I have returned.

Ok so here's a little suggestion. When you take a ski trip with your family to the mountains of North Carolina, do not expect to have any internet. I went with the intention of catching up on everything that I missed on Friday and such, and surprise surprise--- no internet in our cabin. So as you might guess Mrs. Moon, I am a little behind and unsure about what is going on tomorrow and what I missed. Obviously Hamlet..... do I just need to read Act III or should I read Act IV as well? As far as my A.P. Essay, since I was not there Friday, do you want me to bring a "slightly" corrected essay to class tomorrow? If so, what exactly is "slightly corrected?" Because I see the comments you made and immediately want to address all of the issues, but this would no doubt require me to rewrite a good portion of my essay.... HMMMMMM... Confusion, Confusion, Confusion. Any Suggestions or comments?

AP Exam Questions and Answers

Please post your question and your answer here. Remember, you need to know these for Tuesday's quiz, so the sooner you post, the better!

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Oh yea....

Hey Moon, before I completely quit the blog because I definitely don't have enough comments on the videos, while I've been working on my essay, I've noticed that you wrote next to some of my major points that you didn't see how it related to my thesis.
In fact, while rereading it, I don't really see how you were confused by what I was saying. I mean, to me it makes perfect sense and has everything to do with my thesis. I think I provided enough legitimate examples and stuff from the text to support it. If it's alright, I'll explain some of my points and stuff to you tomorrow, and we'll go from there.

videos.

Why did nobody watch my two part series? They're not racist or anything. Just funny. Seriously, if I don't have 1 comment from everyone in the class on the videos, INCLUDING senora Moon, I'm gonna quit the blog. Try me.

Hamlet Act III

So I just reread Hamlet Act III. This is the best act ever!!! There is so much drama, sexual tension and innuendos, murder...it really is the climax of the play. I wish we were reading it together, but we must move on...

Some major points to think about/remember:

Scene 1:
  • Note the famous "to be or not to be" monologue. It is famous for a reason! What is Hamlet pondering? What are his feelings here?
  • What does Hamlet really mean when he tells Ophelia (many times) "get thee to a nunnery."? Why is he acting this way towards her?
  • What has Claudius decided to do with Hamlet?

Scene 2: The play scene. Very important. Watch for puns and other word play.

  • Note the first conversation between Hamlet and Ophelia.
  • Note all of Hamlet's side comments during the play. What's his motivation? Purpose? The intended outcome?
  • What is Claudius' reaction to the play? What does Hamlet think?
  • How has Hamlet's feelings towards Rosencrantz and Guildenstern changed? Why?

Scene 3:

  • Note Claudius' soliloquy. What is he saying?
  • Then Hamlet comes in. He has the chance to avenge his father's murder. Why doesn't he?

Scene 4:

  • This is the scene in which many scholars see Hamlet's Oedipal Complex. Do you see one?
  • Why does he kill Polonius?
  • Why does Hamlet think his mother married Claudius so quickly?
  • What is Gertrude thinking here?
  • Why does the ghost appear again?

So much great stuff here! Shakespeare really was a genius!

Here is a little quiz...test yourself!

Exams and other info

Hi! It is odd not seeing you all today. I hope your 3rd block exam went well!

Don't forget to read Act III of Hamlet . If you are here at all tomorrow, stop by my room so you can get the Act III study guide. It will help you with interpretation.

I hope to see you all on Friday with your Macbeth essay. We meet from 12:25-3:35. Do I expect you to be here the whole block? Nope. Get your parents to write you a note to check out! We will be peer editing and discussing Hamlet for about 1.5 hours. So, if you want to check out around 2:00, it's fine with me. BUT (and that's a big but) you must have parental permission to leave. I will not just let you out!

Take Monday the 18th off, then I will see you bright and early Tuesday the 19th for our "exam" block which is 8:35-11:50. We will be finishing Act IV of Hamlet and doing some important AP stuff! You will want to be here. (I may even have a treat for you).

Questions?

...I'm so proud of you ? Neglected

ok so why didn't we get an "I'm so proud of you" and our list of names? Are you playing favorites?
So since you didn't say it , I'll pretend to be you.... I just don't know how to switch login names so I will improvise:

CONGRATULATIONS Kathryn , Lauren, Brittany, Allison, and Sarah! I'm so proud of you !"

I'm pretty sure that's what you would have said, even though I'm pretty sure you have the other five as favorites. Ha, oh well! See you tomorrow!

Break it down

Soooooo... the break down of grades is as follows:

A=8
B=2

(I think...I'm pretty sure). I don't have the rubrics in front of me right now at home, but I did calculate tonight's scores.

We have had some scores of 100%, too! But I'm not giving any hints about them.

Sleep in tomorrow morning!

Then it's cake time!

SPEECHES!

Are you practicing your GP speeches? (Heads better start nodding). Half of you will be giving the real thing on Tuesday!! You need practice!

Remember, some of you will also be giving practice speeches for the class tomorrow. Be prepared, or else...

Meaning

OK. So I get the literal part... surprisingly. And i get what you mean bout the feeling. But How are you supposed to phrase it so that it is not choppy and sounding personal or redundant. I know that you are not supposed to say " ... leaving the reader feeling______." I know that is wrong, but how do you convey the information more discretely?? Any suggestions?

Friday, January 1, 2010

what if we photshopped LARN on top of may in the picture?
