In what area did you feel unprepared on the AP Lit exam?

In other words, what can/should I focus on more (or at all) to prepare my students this year for the Exam? Be honest. Seriously. (But don't even mention omitting The Awakening or Beloved).

Are you at school yet? I know that UNCW's classes start soon, so I got to thinking about you all and that you will officially be college students so soon!

So, if I could go back and give my college freshman self some advice from my 30 year old self, here's what I would say:

1. Don't skip class. Ever. College is really expensive. You're paying for education, not sleeping.

2. All nighters (drinking, studying, eating, whatever) are WAY overrated.

3. Get involved in more campus activities. You'll meet a wider variety of people and will have fun experiences.

4. Study abroad. Just for a semester. You will be fine.

5. Ditch the people who are negative influences on you.

6. Call mom and dad more. They worry.

7. Take more classes outside of you major. Anti-social behavior and its consequences sounds pretty interesting!

8. Friends are people who care about you and respect your decisions. Find them. Lose others.

9. Volunteer in your local community.

10. Be yourself but be willing to know that change can be a good thing.

Since we were cut short on time today (as per usual), I didn't get to say my little closing remarks to everyone, so I'll put them here. (Picture me saying this with all sincerity!)

I am really glad that we had such a small class this year. It's quite rare for a teacher to get to have a class of 9 students, and while at first, it seems a little daunting (no large class discussions! no big group projects!) I am thankful that each and every one of you were in the class! I really feel like I got to get to know each of you, and that you got to know me as well! Sometimes, with big classes, some students get pushed to the side or just slide by. Well, with a class of 9 that just can't happen.

So, now that the year is over and I'm doing a little reflecting (and cringing about having a class of 40 for next year), I realized that you guys are one of my favorite classes I've ever taught and will remember it fondly. I'm lucky to have had a class of 9 bright, funny, hard-working seniors and I'll really miss you all next year!

Yay for the intellectual debate we are having.

However, we must be kind and respectful to each other's opinions. The great thing about teaching smart kids is the fact that I don't have to worry about pettiness creeping in.

We must be able to hear each other while really listening, process another's opinion, and either agree or respectfully disagree.

No yelling or talking over each other will be tolerated in class. I want to finish our anticipation guide tomorrow, and hopefully we can.

Great class today! I've been bragging to all my teacher friends about how great you all are and how interesting our discussion was today. I'm so lucky!

It have come to my attention that there are many idealists in this class, and a few realists. To the idealists: I would be one of you, if we live in perfect world. But we do not. Idealism has been exemplified in history many time to be ineffective. Ever hear of prohibition, the Kellog-Briand Pact of the 1920's, isolationism of the 30's, etc? All were unrealistic, but were idealistic, and ended up causing more problems than they solved. So that is reason why I am a realist, because the world is not perfect, and you have to approach problems with realistic solutions and not try to abide by certain principles that (you think) are set in stone. Principles may guide you in your thinking, but there always is a gray area, and principles can not always be counted on. It is this way, and only this way, that progress is ever made. Do you think that if we lived in the 80's idealists would have supported Reagan's expansion of the military? No, and while it was (and still is) controversial from both perspectives, you could not have counted on the USSR to decrease the size of their military if Reagan had followed an idealistic approach such as a decrease in the size of the US military. Reagan's solution was....realistic, and now we have the ability to maintain a classroom discussion over simpler things without worrying about a nuclear holocaust.

For the multiple choice...

1. Wear a watch.
2. Note the time you begin.
3. Choose the multiple choice section that appeals to you the most.
4. Note 15 minutes on your paper. (Your stop time).
5. Read the whole selection (twice for a shorter piece)
6. Answer the questions using POE. If you can get down to 2, guess!

Try to get to all of your selections. Remember, you are trying to miss only 3-4 per selection! If time is running out, DO NOT just randomly guess. You will be losing points.

For the essays...

1. Note the time you begin.
2. Allow 40 minutes per essay. Note your stop time on your paper.
3. Choose the essay that appeals to you the most.
4. Work the prompt. Understand what is being asked.
5. Annotate the prose or poetry piece. Underline the literary devices you see.
6. Create a literary device/effect chart.

9. Divide into paragraphs.
10. Write an awesome essay!

and i started thinking.
this is like poetry.
infact, this is better than a lot of poetry, or on par at least.
metaphors, rhymes, emotions, etc. plus. its rap music, so its cool.
then i started thinking about that maya angelou quote about 'poetry being music', and i thought about how much newfound thinking of certain rap music as poetry was conflicted with this thought.
i shrugged it off, but the whole time i was listening to this one song on repeat like 15 times.
here the cause of this thinking,

i know you wanted us to print out our poem and bring it in for you tomorrow. but i have no ink in my printer, so if it is alright, i would like to print it from yours in the morning (the color would look nicer anyways). i have my poem picked out and everything.
its not the most jaw dropping epic, read into it forever.
there are a thousand better ones.
but i enjoy it alot.
and if we are posting these all around some high school in an attempt to make a tiny etch in the masses appriciation of the art, we should start with something that they will at least understand, and not some way too old skool ap prompt stuff.
anyways my poem is RIGHT HERE if you want proof.
i hope you dont mind me printing in your class tomorrow morning. ill be there at 820.

So, here's what is going on tomorrow:

You will get in front of the class and give a brief summary of your novel. (You may or may not want to tell the ending). You will also share one of your creative assignments (or both if they are short--I'll determine) and do some explaining. For those who did a soundtrack--you will pick 4 songs to play excerpts from and you will explain how the songs fit your novel.

You will be graded tomorrow on your presentation skills. You will get a separate grade for the book report itself.

ive never really read any "metafiction" as you called it
except maybe 'a series of unfortunate events'
it was... good.
if someone asked me if i liked it, i would say 'yes',
and i would recommend it.
but it was strange.
funny and comical at times, and i could defiantly see the satire in it.

i came across this man.
Kobayashi Issa.
and i almost picked one of his poems, the first i saw.
called "With My Father"
it reads like this:

With my father
I would watch dawn
over green fields.

then i thought, "wait, thats too short, she will get mad."
so i looked at another one, and another one, and another one.
this man has the same style poems for like 100+ of all his works
like i know some poetry is abstract.
but come on. seriously? this is art. look at this poem by him

How long do the quote explanations and other explanations ( i.e.- song relating or 10 things in a time castle related?) need to be? Just thorough?
How Long does the summary need to be for the book report? I though I remember you saying like one page.
